                         - P.Krishnamoorthy

The setting sun had almost disappeared in the western skies leaving its gorgeous crimson trails as its parting gift for the day.  Even in the crowded Juhu beach of Bombay, Shilpa and Sushil were able to find a quiet corner near a grounded fishing boat.  The usual rendezvous was quite comfortable and assured privacy.  While Shilpa was leaning on Sushil’s body dreaming their married life, her physical warmth was quite comforting to Sushil . He was upbeat in his unbounded imagination. He was head over heels in love with her.  Shilpa broke the silence.

“Sushil! I don’t want you to play the hero’s role any more in the ‘Seaside Suicide’ play”.
“Why? You told me that you liked the play and people enjoyed it. There was a thunderous applause yesterday when I finished the play”. Sushil was more inquisitive to know her reason.

“Sushil. May be the play attracted audience; but not me.  I could not stand the climax where you and  Mala, the heroine, committing  suicide as your proposal to get married falls through, for lack of parental consent on both sides. I don’t want you to die even in a role play.   I strongly believe in instincts. Our lives are built on our thoughts.   I recently read a book on palmistry, where the author explains that even  the  lines in the palm change as per  one’s thoughts.” Shilpa was more imparting a voice of her own conviction.
“Shilpa! There was a good review about the play last week in a weekly magazine, high lighting  the callousness of the elderly generation still clinging to the traditional blind faith  of arranged marriages on astrological match,  have been successful and not the preferred choices. They have highly reviewed my vivid portrayal of the main role with a strong note of social concern. Only with the present climax, the play had a strong and intense impact on the audience.  If it was a happy ending, the play would have wallowed in soft focus.  You should be more realistic in your thoughts.  Life would always be with ups and downs. It is how we adjust to such situation that decides the happiness Sushil detailed his opinion. There was a sudden pause between them”.  Only the tidal waves were breaking the silence..

“Sushil. I had enough of your philosophy. I am always an optimist looking things on  the positive side.  Promise me that you will not play that role any more” Shilpa meant in her words.

“I don’t mind making any promise for your sake; but have you at least made an effort to either directly or indirectly inform your parents of our mutual love and tried their consent for our marriage?  I know your dad believes more in an arranged marriage. He is very particular about the antecedents of the bridegroom than his present status. He also strongly believes in the astrological match of the bride and the groom. In this background, I am very skeptical on your parents’ consent for our marriage. I think only my plan of ‘run away type’ would work.  I am ready for it any time. I know my uncle also would  not allow me to get married to my choice”.

“No Sushil.  That should never happen.  Somehow we have to convince them despite their resistance.  I don’t believe in getting married without their blessings”.
“Shilpa, I would suggest your initiating it this evening itself with your parents and let me know how it goes.”  After a responsive nod, Sushil dropped Shilpa near her home and left.

Shilpa pressed the doorbell.   The nearby   tower clock chimed ten. She was hoping that her father would be asleep by that time and only her mother would open the door. Alas!  it was a disappointment.  Only retired Col. Rajesh, her dad opened the door. Shilpa could see his grey moustache becoming stiffer along with  his eyebrows raised  at the sight of her. “Shilpa. You know what time is now? His gruff voice was more of a lion’s roar.
“Dad I was with my friend all evening, watching a movie in the video.  She just dropped me in the corner now”.  She was cool in her poignant response to avoid any escalation of his toughness.
“I was waiting for you the whole evening Shilpa.  I wanted to talk to you something very important.  This type of late coming everyday worries me very much.  I am now retired and my health is not that all good  to depend upon for anything.  You know, I had a bypass surgery recently. It is my earnest desire that I should see you married before I die.  In fact your mother and I were discussing about your marriage just now.  My old friend Sharma who is now in Bangalore, was a long time associate to the old Maharajah of Mysore.  He had been blessed with royal patronage including  a big house, garden etc. in Bangalore.  He has only one son who is also well settled after an excellent education. For the sake of our old  time friendship, Sharma is keen to have his son married to you.  Even many years before we both had an understanding on this. He would be very happy to finalize it now.  I happened to check your horoscope with his son’s, yesterday with our family astrologer and they matched perfectly.  This itself is a good sign and a providential direction for the wedding to take place. All that I need from you is your consent”.  Col. Rajesh’s wishful look at Shilpa was quite an evidence of his eagerness for a positive response from her.

Shilpa was taken aback at this sudden turn of events.  Initially she was planning to tell her parents about her choice on that evening as per her promise to Sushil.  Now she felt it was not the appropriate time. “Dad ! What is the urgency for my marriage now?  I need some more time to think about this. I could understand your anxiety. But I am sure nothing will happen to you. You will celebrate my wedding before your life time. All I need is some more time to think about your proposal. Please do not commit anything to your friend now”.  Shilpa thought this way she could  satisfy him tentatively with an option to work on her proposal  later. But Col. Rajesh was persistently attempting to have Shilpa’s commitment for his proposition.

“Shilpa!  You are not a young girl any more. From your evasive response I could perceive your reluctance to my choice.   I only hope that you don’t have anything different and definite in your mind.  I don’t like to go back on our word to Mr. Sharma and that has to go through at all costs.  I am a person strongly believing in honoring commitments. They are from a very good family”. Col. Rajesh was in a quandary, for he never expected a defeat from Shilpa.

Though it was nearly five years since his retirement from the Army Division, Col. Rajesh  still wanted his home to be a military regiment  to ensure discipline and his words to be the gospel truth.  Nirupama had been only a silent spectator since she stepped in Col. Rajesh’s abode as his wife four decades ago. The rule of a military discipline at home gave her little option except to keep silent on any issue, which was obviously  a trade in for domestic peace.  This time also, it was no different.  But she rightly judged that  Shilpa would not be accepting her dad’s proposal. She was only trying to buy time to come out with her choice later.  Col. Rajesh was already feeling a sense of defeat  at  Shilpa’s  stubborn  attitude.  He thought a sentimental strategy would convince her.

“Shilpa! I am not happy with your answer. Whatever we do for you is always to your happiness and prosperity.  The so called ‘personal choice’ marriages have miserably failed in many instances. When the infatuation of the youth gradually fades, even the trivial differences turn out magnified to assume greater proportions, culminating in a rift between them. In this process, the concept of tolerance is often totally missed, leading to divorces.  Arranged marriages based on astrological match guarantee a balance of ups and downs in life divided between the two through  the pattern of planetary  movements. Your mother and I got married through arranged process, and I don’t think neither I nor she had ever regretted it.”  Nirupama reacted silently but sharply to this. “Dad ! I quite agree that what you do will always be for my happiness.  Somehow I do not have any faith in the astrological approaches in life.  I think I would prefer to leave the subject without any further discussions” This open-shut approach disturbed Col. Rajesh extensively.

Shilpa herself was surprised at her unprecedented boldness with which she reacted to her father.  Col. Rajesh was shocked and surprised at her definite negative opinion on the traditional process.   He could not control his emotions, as all these days, nothing was decided against his wishes, since he was wielding an authority even on personal matters of others. He was agitated more at the breaking of the traditional practices and cultural norms.     On an impact he felt a mild tremor under his feet. Shilpa quietly walked out of the scene to her room while the parents looked at her stubbornness with extreme disappointment.

Shilpa called Sushil  on  the telephone.  Sushil’s aunt answered the call.  “Sushil.  This call is for you”. As she was calling Sushil, she left the receiver on the table.  Shilpa could hear the heated arguments exchanged between  Sushil and his uncle, Verma. “Sushil.  You are not deciding anything on your marriage.  Traditionally we have been deciding this lifelong binding through astrological match and not just by meeting some body.  We would ensure that the girl is from a good family without any encumbrances. Your choice should be only to see whether she is good looking.  We would also be careful in selecting the girl who will be suitable to you in all respects”
“Uncle !  As this relates to my future life, I have every right to select whom I want, who had understood me and vice versa. I am sorry to differ with you on this issue. Believe me, this is my final decision”. Sushil was tough, clear and firm in his response. Shilpa’s face was quickly reflecting her happiness at Sushil’s strong conviction in driving his point home to his uncle.

“Sushil! This was the problem of allowing you to play the hero’s role in the “Seaside Suicide” drama.  I know you want to get married to your heroin Mala.  I saw her only once and she is no match to you.  It is okay in the drama under powerful lights and cosmetic make-up, not in real life”. “Uncle   I will tell you whom I  going to marry  at the  appropriate time. But certainly the choice is mine and not astrology’s.   I am going to live with her and not with the astrological planets”.“Sushil.  I told you there is somebody on the telephone.” The aunt was interrupting and reminding him of the pending call.   As Sushil picked up the phone,  Shilpa  conveyed her greetings. “Congratulations.  Well done.  Keep it up”.  “What happened at your end dear?” Sushil’s voice was anxious and concerned. “The same bold stand I took with my dad. He was puzzled at my resistance.  But I am sure this will go through well in our way as both sides faced the first defeat”.

Presuming that the overnight would have changed the condition to a cool temper from the last evening’s ideological war, she slowly came out of her room to the drawing hall.  Col. Rajesh was smoking his first cigar of the day and the whole room smelled of the strong smoke. “Good morning Dad.” Shilpa was unpretentious in her greetings. Col. Rajesh was grim and  his well expressed annoyance towards her was confirming that he was still sticking to his guns.

“Dad  I said good morning” Shilpa indicated her indignation of his silence even to reciprocate the greetings.
“What is there for a good morning? Shilpa.  I thought you are still the old young girl.  I also thought that you will honor my commitments in my life. I and your mother brought you up with all freedom and conveniences which we could afford in our life.   All the time our aim was that you should never feel unhappy and in that process, we have sacrificed our personal priorities to provide you everything you wanted.  I don’t mean to ask you something in return; but as we have been doing everything for good  for you,  you should also have some concern for us.  I would still insist you giving a serious thought about our position. I don’t even like to know who is your choice.   But I would certainly like to honor my commitment.”

Following this after a little pause, Col. Rajesh used his trump card to influence her. “Shilpa.  If anything happens to me in my trailing health which could be because of a stigma I would bear for default of my commitment, you would be responsible for it”. As he finished those strong words, Shilpa could see him sobbing and concealing his tears. Shilpa did not expect this emotional setback with him. But her resolve to stick to what she wanted did not change in any way even after the sentimental and melodrama piece. Instead, it provided her with a flash in her mind which she decided to use against him later. As she was pondering the next move.   Sushil’s telephone call interrupted her thoughts.

“Shilpa! How did it go this morning”. “Status quo maintained. Any development in your home”
“Same  here also.  At least your dad talked to you.  Both my uncle and aunt don’t even like to see my face or talk to me. I think we should meet this evening and decide our next move   I have something in my mind.  We will discuss that plan. I am sure that should work in our way”. Shilpa was smart enough to inform her parents that she has a birthday party to attend in her friend, Preeti’s place that evening.

The usual meeting venue  in Juhu beach was welcoming the young lovers.  This time it was early evening and the sun was quite a witness to their intimate conversations. “Sushil! It is time for us to provide an alternate to our people to make them accept our proposal. Can you think of anything on those lines?” “Shilpa.  My choice is just simple.  The‘run-away type.  It hurts me too. Just to leave them for all they have done for us  in our lives so far.  But we have very little choice” Sushil finished his part.  “I had a flash of a new idea when my dad told me that I may have to marry somebody only over his dead body”. “That was too much for him to say, Shilpa”  Sushil was voicing his concern.

“Sushil.  It is a struggle in both sides when this issue comes for a decision. The generation gap between our elders and us sharply divide us on this issue. Somehow we have to resolve this.   The options left open are two.  We part as friends and get married as per our elders’ choice; or without any concern to them, go forward in the life stream together. But I have a novel idea to solve this and I feel it is worth trying it”.  “I quiet understand your point.  But what is your funny plan?”
“My dad was referring to his death.  I know he was using that trump card to get me on sentimental side so that I would agree for his proposal.  Why not we use the same trump card against him and  in your home too”|.  “I don’t understand your whole plan Shilpa”.’ “It is simple.  As you have been playing the role of a frustrated lover in the “Seaside suicide” play and finally resorting to suicide along with your drama beloved, we would just give our people a shock treatment of committing suicide.  We would leave a note in either home to this effect.  This will certainly create a sense of compassion in them for us and would agree to our proposal. Even if my dad and your uncle don’t  yield to this, my mother’s and your aunt’s pressure on them would certainly make the difference”.

Sushil had a hearty laugh at the plan and uttered a cryptic remark:  This is reminiscent of cinematic credibility”. “Shilpa.  Think about the other side. If they don’t change in their decision   and just leave us away, our alternative is just leave our homes which we could straightaway do it”. “Sushil, I am a strong believer in instincts and I have a hunch that this would certainly work in our way.  Only the logistics for the plan should be thoroughly finalized so that by any slip up  we would not become a laughing stock.  I don’t mean that we should really commit suicide. But there should be a very deceptive realism in the whole scenario”.

“In my home, I am sure on seeing the note, immediately my parents will call my  friend  Preeti , as they know we are close to each other.  We would brief her with our plan; but she would tell them that both of us were planning to go to Juhu beach that evening.  I am sure based on her reply they would rush to the beach.  We should wait for their arrival.  As we could see their coming in from a distance we would start our acting part of going into the sea for committing suicide.   I am sure they will stop us at that time and agree to our proposal”. Shilpa’s confidence of her plan was convincing,. Similarly, Ranjit, Sushil’s close associate would be counterpart of Preeti to help them out. They decided the next day evening as an auspicious time to execute their plan of suicide.

The whole night both Shilpa and Sushil were restless in their homes. Shilpa could see the early morning sun into her room making it brighter. She was contemplating as to how to start the ‘suicide note’. She had a strange feeling when she started the suicide note. It would declare an eternal separation from her parents and she could not even imagine the parental emotional reactions, in particular of her mother. But she reconciled to the fact that the proposed ‘suicide’ is a fake and not real one.  She finally wrote the ‘note” after several rehearsals.

Dear Dad and Mom,
With all my reluctance and regret I am writing this note to you.
I do not want to go against your wishes; but at the same time I am not happy over my choice without your blessings.  The only option left for me at this time, is to end myself so that,  because of me, dad will not become a defaulter of his commitment to his friend. On this score, he need not also live with a kind of stigma for the rest of his life.   I am ending my life on my own freewill and there was nobody responsible for it.  With full consent of my conscience, I am doing this.  Please do not try to stop me from doing this. Your loving daughter, Shilpa

Ön completion of the note she was relieved as it was conveying what she wanted. A similar note was prepared by Sushil. Both the homes witnessed strange behaviors of the two involved, as they were totally detached in their talk, depressed in their moods,  nonchalant for any interrogations. Shilpa went out and called Preeti from a payphone and informed her of their plans. She was startled even at hearing it.  After extensive explanations, she was convinced. It would certainly be just acting and nothing real. Preeti also assured her that she would  stay home at that time so that they would  not miss her. They were happy to get a similar support from Ranjit also.

For Shilpa it was just a strange experience of fear and hope. Fear in the perception that if anything misfires in her calculation during this drama, it would cast a heavy stigma for the rest of her life.  Hope, in the sense that she would have a married life with Sushil with the blessings of her parents. The puzzle of where to keep the ‘suicide note’ for her parents to see without fail still confused her.  She hatched a plan for this note.  After lunch, Col. Rajesh would always take a nap for two to three hours every day.  She knew before taking the nap he used to keep his eye-glasses near the small Buddha statue on the side table.  She thought it was ideal to keep the note on the side table and under his spectacles so that when he wakes up from the nap, he would pick up his eye glasses when he would see the note.   It was already 12.oo noon at that time and she had to wait for at least one hour.  Sushil also agreed for a similar process as his uncle also had the same routine in the afternoon.

As the time passed, she became totally restless as her dad was on the telephone for long with his friend.  Indirectly she told “Dad, I am hungry. Why don’t you come for lunch now.”  At her instance, he finished his conversation and joined her for the lunch. Col. Rajesh went into his bedroom for a nap. Shilpa, though was watching the TV, had her concentration only on her dad’s room.  She ensured that the handwritten note was with her and waiting for the moment to put into the place. It was a favorable coincidence, her mother too, after her kitchen work, returned to the reclining chair for a nap.  When she could hear the dad’s snoring, Shilpa believed that all were set providentially for their plan. She quietly called Sushil and informed the developments at her end. Sushil also confirmed things were working out to their favor in his home and after some time, he would come and pick her up in a cab at the end of the street and wanted her to be ready there.

Shilpa looked at her parents.  She was feeling heavy in her heart on the parting.  Her initial enthusiasm to carry out the mockery suicide plan  was waning slowly, as the emotional side of her mind took control of her.  May be her new life with Sushil would be happy, but, the present parting from her parents was quite a test to her.  To make a quick decision, she was weighing the pros and cons of her agreeing to her parents’ choice and her own.   He choice tilted the scale and now she decided to leave.  She could still feel the tears gathering in her eyes at her leaving them; she touched the feet of her parents quietly to bid farewell.  She kept her suicide note under her father’s spectacles, picked up her bag and quietly walked out of  the home.   At the end of the road,  Sushil was waiting in a cab and she joined him.

It was already four in the evening when they arrived in the beach. Their usual place was vacant and hardly people were around. . There was a heavy overcast and they had apprehension whether there would be a celestial intervention with a downpour which would mar their plan. However optimistic they were, a sort of guilt  prevailed in them.   Shilpa broke the silence.  “Sushil! I am getting worried now.”  “Shilpa ! For what?”
“Sushil.  For some reason if our people don’t turn up at the beach even after contacting Preeti and Ranjit, we cannot go back home. Then…..” She wanted Sushil to complete the rest. “Shilpa.  Don’t worry.  The alternative is there to stay overnight with my friend in Dadar.”  “Okay.  The night will go.  But afterwards……?   “Tomorrow is yet another day Shilpa.  We will cross the bridge when we reach that point. Something would have been destined for us”.

The clouds started gathering heavily, making the sun totally eclipsed.  The waves  were rough and powerful. Both Shilpa and Sushil decided to have a rehearsal of their climax.   With all apprehensions, they were also confident that both her parents and his uncle and aunt would be coming down to the beach as per Preeti’s direction.  When they come, the plan was that Sushil and Shilpa would make a move towards the sea in a bid to commit suicide when they would be stopped by them. This would be followed with a reconciliation scene and consent for their marriage. Shilpa and Sushil wanted to test the waters for the depth. They felt they could handle it  without any problem. It was getting dark further and the drizzle played games with the beads of the setting sun. The relentless roar of the waves was more powerful. There was a sudden lightning followed by mild thunder, heralding the heavy downpour to follow. It was already six in the evening and around that time only, they were expecting the visitors.  They were right.

The blue car of Col. Rajesh was speeding towards the beach from the main road.  Shilpa recognized their car. This was followed by another vehicle which Sushil recognized as theirs.  Now things should move as they were planned. This meant that the suicide notes were rightly picked up b  both the families.  The cars stopped at the entrance of the beach and both the families got down and rushed towards the beach.  Both  Shilpa and Sushil moved into the sea swiftly to enact the suicide part. . “Shilpa!  Don’t do that.  We are agreeable for your choice.  Please stop”.  She could hear her parents’ voices together. Following this, Sushil's uncle  and aunt  made a similar plea in unequivocal terms.  Shilpa and Sushil could hear their repeated plea as they were coming towards them.

After a lightning, when Sushil and Shilpa were in the sea, there was a torrential downpour. Col. Rajesh was repeating his request to return followed by Varma’s, reaffirming their consent to the young couple. Sushil and Shilpa were jubilant at accomplishing the consent of the elders for their marriage. Rejoicing their triumph, they were returning to the shore. Suddenly there was a high tide from the sea, engulfed and dragged them into the sea.  Both were struggling to retrieve themselves from the high tide. But they were overpowered by the wave and pulled them into the sea. Any amount of screaming by both for help was futile as the people from the shore could not even go into the sea due to the heavy rain and continuous high tides. After brave efforts, Shilpa was dazed and fainted.  Sushil held Shilpa strongly and continued his struggle to reach the shore. Another successive tide got them again and hauled them into the sea. As Sushil was totally exhausted, he gave up and he also fainted.

Col. Rajesh and Nirupama could not bear the sight of the duo getting drowned. Verma and his wife were sobbing at the scene of Sushil’s struggle in the sea. They all could only pray for their safe return as the persisted rains at torrential pitch and the rough sea prevented them from any rescue operation.  They were also sure that both would be drowned soon. The mockery suicide was to end in a real one.  It was a tragedy when they got the elders consent for their life partnership, they were not going to be alive to live through. It was an intense scene with all eyes focused in the sea with screams of sorrow at the drowning of the couple. In seconds, there was another forceful wave from the mid sea pushed both alive towards the shore.

When Sushil and Shilpa regained consciousness, they realized that they were in a nursing home surrounded by their relatives and friends. “Dad, I am sorry for all this confusion.  I could no help you in honoring your commitment to your friend as I wanted to get married to Sushil. We thought at least in death we could be united.”  Shilpa signaled Sushil with a sarcastic smile on the irony of her statement. “No. Shilpa. You are wrong. I would still honor my commitment to my friend. Sushil is none but my friend Sharma’s only son. I just came to know about this through his uncle when we were coming here.” Verma smiled at both and nodded his affirmation of that relationship. Supporting this, the music of wedding bells from a nearby temple promptly endorsed their new married life.

BLUE DIAMONDS

-     P.Krishnamoorthy

This episode has all the ingredients of a heist fiction in line with the format of an athletic relay race. The plot moves in four stages before returning to the origin stage.     Blue diamonds are the baton for the race in this narration.

Sharat, an energetic and ambitious young man, with academic post-graduation qualification, had aspirations to become rich and famous. He was trying to get a career as an executive in any leading company. But he was able to get only a media reporter job in “News Herald”, a leading daily. Kay Jewelers, one of the leading diamond merchants in Surat, had arranged for an exclusive private showing of the diamonds to celebrities and media people from Mumbai to boost their sales. As it was an exclusive meet late in the evening, there were no walk-in customers allowed in the showroom. They had displayed the diamonds according to their carat, cuts and sizes. Vasant Rai, the head of Kay Jewelers welcomed and briefed the visitors on various processing of diamonds to become dazzlingly brilliant when finished. Sharat, also an invitee as a media representative, was enjoying the ambiance of the place, since the rendezvous looked ultra-modern in every detail. He was imagining the total worth of the displayed stock in crores. After a concluding brief on diamonds, Rai requested the participants to move to an adjoining hall where finished jewelry in diamonds and gold were displayed. When the visitors moved to the other section, Rai left specific instructions to Kishore, his general manager to ensure all the diamond pouches were counted and tallied with the stock before depositing in the vault.

While Kishore was keeping the pouches, his attention was suddenly diverted by a phone call in his cell. As the call conveyed a very disturbing personal message, he was totally upset and his mind went blank. He forgot the count of the pouches and one pouch left out at the end of the display desk. Sharat noticed that pouch was still on the desk which was very adjacent to the pillar. His ambitious aspiration to become rich, impelled him to avail that opportunity. ‘Morality is only lack of opportunity” and the proverbial saying “Make hey while the sun shines” compelled him to do what he wanted to do. The CCTV camera that was on the pillar was focused only towards the display desk. Kishore was still on the phone. These gave Sharat an idea of his hiding behind the pillar and stretching only his front part of his hand to pick up the pouch. He was sure that would not be noticed by anybody as all others were in the jewelry section. The CCTV camera also would not transmit image as it was focused only on the display desk area. After the call, Kishore closed the vault with safe keys without the last pouch. Sharat looked around and picked up the pouch. He went into the rest room and kept the pouch on top of the water tank above the flush at a height. He then returned to the jewelry area and joined with other people. Even a professional heist group would not plan so meticulously in such a short time. Concluding the show, Rai gave a small gift to the participants on their way out. Sharat went back to the rest room and picked up his treasure. He then proceeded to the rail station to take the last train to Mumbai with the diamonds in a backpack.

Sharat boarded the train and got inside a cubicle. He was anxiously waiting for any other co-passengers in the same compartment. Two men walked in and placed their luggage under their berths. By their conversations Sharat knew their names as Dilip and Hemanth proceeding to Mumbai. But by their appearance, Sharat felt uneasy with them. He was careful with his backpack and ensured to keep that always very close to him. Though he was responding to their usual queries, he had always an eye on his backpack. With a ‘good night’, they retired to sleep. As Sharat was holding the backpack securely with him, they had a suspicion whether he had anything valuable in it. They were waiting for an opportunity to check the backpack in his absence. Sharat was thinking about various risk-free methods to convert the diamonds into cash. Often he checked whether the other two were sleeping. When he was convinced they were fast asleep and that there would not be any problem from them, he left his backpack under a pillow and went into the rest room. Dilip and Hemant got up and checked Sharat’s backpack. On their ransacking the contents, they found the pouch of blue diamonds. Both looked at each other with glee and joy in their faces, they shook hands on acquiring the treasure. By that time Sharat came back from the rest room and saw them holding the pouch. He yelled and tried to snatch the pouch from them. Swiftly Dilip took a knife and held over Sharat’s neck. Hemant was tying his mouth and also his hands with a tape so that he would not shout for any help. As Sharat resisted them too violently, Dilip stabbed him with his knife multiple times in the chest and stomach. Sharat fell down fainted. As the train stopped in the next station, the other two got down and quietly walked out from the scene with the backpack. Dilip was so sure that Sharat may not survive with the stab injuries. On his routine rounds, as the ticket examiner found the fainted Sharat still alive, he made arrangements to move him to the nearby hospital for treatment.

On the next day, Kay Jewelers, while checking the inventory of the pouches, found one pouch missing. Rai immediately placed Kishore under suspension. On a complaint from Rai, police also arrested Kishore on suspicion. In the footage of the CCTV, it showed only the human forearm picking up a pouch from the display desk.

The doctors found the stab injuries of Sharat were very deep and serious with the one in his neck besides heavy loss of blood. Though critical when he was brought to the hospital, with immediate surgical procedures, they revived him. Ten days after surgery, he was able to disclose how the other two co-passengers seized his backpack thinking that there was something valuable in it. He was resisting them strongly from taking the backpack, but one tied his mouth with a strong adhesive tape and the other stabbed him in different places and he became unconscious. On police enquiry Sharat did not disclose the pouch of diamonds in the backpack. They could not find the backpack nor any trace of it.

Dilip and Hemanth, professional robbers, who visited Surat to commit a heist of gold or diamonds, failed as local conditions of their targets, were securely guarded from robbers. Sharat’s backpack with a pouch of diamonds was an unexpected windfall and treasure hunt for them.

The relay had its first stage with the baton of blue diamonds.

Dilip and Hemant were very close friends in Mumbai since school days. They were also residents in the same area. As school drop outs, they were doing daily menial and hard jobs. Frustrated with the kind of living, they resorted to small thefts, gradually leading to hoists. With the present gains, they were thinking as to how to convert the diamonds to hard cash. Dilip suggested the best solution to get rid of the treasure, was only outside Mumbai which would be safe to avoid the police net. Hemanth suggested Nasik would be a better venue for their future secret activities. Dilip concurred with his idea. The contents of the backpack were changed to a carry-on with a false bottom to conceal the pouch of diamonds. They also destroyed the empty backpack in a fire. They avoided going outside in the streets during day light to avoid any detection by any authority. After sunset in the dark, they boarded an Omni bus to Nasik and reached the place past midnight. When the city was asleep, they found an ordinary hotel. With false names they checked in at the reception and got a room in the sixth floor.

Both were not able to sleep in spite of long travel, as the treasure haunted them with mixed feelings of fear and happy emotions. Though they had handled many such heists earlier, this was their maiden adventure with diamonds. The risk of getting caught by the police was much more if they approach any jeweler directly to dispose of their acquired possession. Next morning both were in the open balcony adjoining the room, discussing the pros and cons of the plans for the day. Both had agreed to do first a survey of the city’s bullion market to find any favorable contact to finalize the deal. Now fate had played a different game.

Dilip’s selfish inner urge calculated the proceeds to be quite substantial if it was not divided with Hemanth. This would also stop him from indulging in future heists. His ambitious plan was leading him to think as how to do away with Hemanth in the deal. Any direct violent action against Hemanth would directly implicate Dilip and consequences would only be to his disaster. He was very seriously thinking a strategy whereby Hemanth could be eliminated without directly involving Dilip in the crime. Dilip’s inner conscience was against this idea, in view of his long partnership with him. Hemanth was leaning on the parapet wall of the balcony. He was engrossed in thinking of any risk-free and better way to convert the diamonds into cash. Dilip’s attention was focused on Hemanth’s leaning on the parapet wall. Suddenly he got an idea to just push him towards open side when he would fall below in the garden area and meet his end. By this modus operandi, Hemanth’s fall would be attributed only as an accidental fall and nobody would doubt about Dilip’s indirect involvement. Dilip was very firm in his partner’s annihilation and the timely opportunity of using Hemanth’s leaning on the wall for this purpose.

Time memorial selfishness had been a natural phenomenon with every human being. and Dilip was no exception to it. Memories of honest togetherness with a partner on many earlier heists, might have ended in mental satisfaction.. But now, under pressure of few moments to decide between compromised living or ambitious future, Dilip opted for the latter. Dilip, as he planned, merely pushed him to a fall and he was gone forever. Dilip, to cover up his criminal act, rushed to garden area and grieved Hemanth’s death along with others. The mockery scene was well orchestrated by Dilip for his personal gains. The police came and after necessary inquiries, they concluded it was a case of accidental fall and closed the case.

The relay had its second stage with the baton of blue diamonds

Dilip was quiet for that day. On the third day, he got the details of the local bullion market and visited that area. It was full of jewelry shops dealing with gold and diamond jewelry. Holding the carry-on strongly with him, he found a jeweler dealing in sales of mostly diamond jewelry. He made a casual enquiry for a diamond necklace. On a glance of Dilip’s outfit, profile and talk, Aditya Ram, the sales assistant understood that he wanted to sell something discreetly. He gestured at Dilip to come to a nearby restaurant during lunch hour.

Aditya came as promised. Without beating the bush, he directly came to the point whether Dilip wanted to sell something. Dilip’s response was more regulated and said that he would like to sell a blue diamond, as he needs money very urgently. Aaditya was smart and said somebody was interested in diamonds, not a single piece but in multiples, to save his only daughter kept captive.by a gangster for ransom. Dilip corrected his earlier enquiry, offered ten pieces of blue diamonds. Aaditya Ram agreed to take him to that person in the evening after the shop was closed. Dilip waited around that area until Aaditya Ram arrived to take him to the prospective buyer. Aaditya Ram wanted an assurance that his interest in the deal would be protected. Both arrived in a factory shed by a taxi. Aaditya Ram took him inside the dilapidated shed where nearly ten strong men and the chief mobster were waiting for them. Dilip felt uneasy at the sight of the gangster who made a condition that he would need ten blue diamond’s urgently to get his only teenaged daughter, kept captive by a rival gangster. The terms were discussed and the chief wanted to see the diamonds. Dilip took the pouch from his carry-on and showed the diamonds. Suddenly a gun shot was heard from a corner. One of his men shot Dilip in the head. Aaditya Ram was flabbergasted at this sudden development. He wanted to leave the place for safety of his life. He was even prepared to forego his share in the deal. But the chief gave him two bundles of currencies and ordered Dilip’s body to be burnt without any trace. As soon as he collected the money from the chief, Aaditya Ram rushed to escape from the scene to save his own life

The relay had its third stage with the baton of blue diamonds

The chief immediately called his rival gangster on the phone and checked with him as to when and where he could bring the ransom diamonds.. The gangster’s reply was a big shock to the chief. He told him that his daughter was shot by his men when she tried to escape from his custody. With tearful eyes and the diamond pouch on one hand, the chief banged on the desk in frustration. He even regretted the death of Dilip. He felt remorse because he killed Dilip, his only daughter had to meet the same fate.

The entire telephone talk between the two gangsters was overheard by the police to trace the call and found their area of operation. Within minutes the police came with two battalions to two different locations and sealed off their premises. With intensive investigation, both the mobsters confessed their crimes of homicides for personal gains.

The police also got the history of the whole case starting with Sharat. Based on circumstantial evidences which had bearing on one another, the police concluded that the missing pouch of the diamonds was the same, finally given to the gangster by Dilip. This was corroborated by Aditya Ram who brought Dilip to the mobster. Solving the riddle, the police finally concluded that the pouch of diamonds was stolen from Kay Jewelers by Sharat. He then travelled by train to Mumbai with Dilip and Hemanth who inflicted him with stab injuries; the next day both travelled to Nasik and stayed in a hotel where Hemanth died due to ‘accidental fall’. Dilip with the help of Aditya Ram met the mobster who was in need of the diamonds to save his captive daughter. Both mobsters confessed their crime of homicides. The missing pouch had the same identification of a red star thereby it was clear that belonged to Kay Jewelers.

The police still had only one puzzle to be solved. They have to prove that Sharat was the one who took the diamonds from Kay Jewelers. The footage of the CCTV showed nothing but a human forearm taking the pouch. There was no other clear proof that the forearm was Sharat’s.

Sharat was in improved health talking to friends and relatives about how close he was to death. But for immediate medical help he would not have survived. He profusely thanked God for his benevolence. Suddenly they saw a police team entering his room. The Inspector wanted to enquire some more details from Sharat, as he was under sedative after surgery during his earlier visit. Sharat still maintained that Dilip and Hemanth had assumed something valuable in his backpack and, on that basis, tried to kill him As they found the pouch with the mobster in a carry-on and no trace of backpack, they definitely require some proof of Sharat’s involvement.

When the inspector was enquiring other details, Sharat got a call in his phone. He stretched his right hand to pick up that call. The inspector suddenly noticed a circular black mole on his right wrist He had a vague remembrance of seeing a black mole in the footage of the CCTV. Instantly the inspector checked the footage of the CCTV where it was very clearly showed the mole on the same spot of the right wrist.  Sharat was dazed at this development, for he never thought of the mole when he was taking the pouch from behind the pillar. Finally he confessed his crime, The inspector arrested him after clearance from the doctor. Sharat’s dream of luxurious life had become a miage to him.

The relay of the blue diamonds reached its fourth stage of origin location - Kay                                             Jewelers; but the price paid in between was with human lives.

 The Eternal Bond

-  P. Krishnamoorthy

It was the second death anniversary of Christopher, son of Judge John Lawrence and Grace Lawrence, who died in a car accident. The day dawned for the couple recapping Christopher’s sentimental memories. Both had their morning first cup of tea in sulky and remorse  mood,  looking at each other in silence. In that exchange, they felt the loss of Christopher, a vibrant and handsome young man, brilliant in academics and a topper in athletic events. They had even seen a girl for his marriage and Christopher was to tell them about his decision. Everything looked now a day-dream for them.  It was dreadful to lose a brilliant and smart Christopher to death at a blossoming age. Often it was a tormenting experience for the Judge resulting in his health problems. What do they look for in the rest of their lives hereafter, was a big question that remained unanswered. A knock on the door by the servant maid disturbed their thoughts.

The  Court House in the downtown area of Atlanta, Georgia was as usual busy with the people to attend their hearings. They were just waiting for the judge to arrive. Of all, there was an  old man’s presence distracted many in the assembled crowd.  At the stroke of ten, the presiding judge, John Lawrence entered the podium from the side door, and occupied his chair. Since Christopher's demise, his erstwhile meticulous style and involvement in dealing the issues, whether personal or professional, were no more with him.He was going thru the case files kept before him for the day and the first file got his attention. The charged individual was a ninety-eight year old man for a traffic violation. The judge adjusted his bi-focal for a clear reading of the file, in particular,  about the age. Then he shifted his focus from the file, and looked around for that old man. He spotted him standing on the side with a paper on hand.

The old man had a partial hunch back and made every effort to see straight in the crowd. He had deep wrinkles on his face and neck. The dark scars dominated in  his facial features. He looked thin and appeared scruffy.  He had steel-rimmed spectacles for his blurred vision. His  hands were slightly shaky and well displayed his nerves. These evidenced  his grand old age. By his appearance the judge estimated his age around eighty. According to the ticket, he had committed a traffic violation in a school zone.

Judge began his inquiry by asking his name and age.  The old man replied his name as Pat Cooper aged ninety-eight years.  As he was rushing his son’s blood work to the doctor in emergency, he was driving the car on that day in the school area to cut short the distance. In normal times he seldom drove the car due to his old age. The Judge asked him what was wrong with his son. He said William, his sixty-three year old son, a disabled was suffering from blood cancer - Luekemia for a year. He had to be under his constant care for the ailments.  Since the hearing had to be attended , he left William under his pastor’s care.  The Judge was startled at ninety-eight taking constant care of an ailing sixty-three.

The Judge was amazed at Cooper’s  incredible tenacity to dedicate his life   to take care of his ailing son even at his grand old age. Suddenly the Judge became very sensitive over this, and felt traumatized as he was recollecting Christopher’s end.  After the accident, Christopher was brought to the hospital where they confirmed  he had multiple fractures and a serious brain injury. An instant surgery was performed to remove the blood clot in the brain. When the judge asked about his condition, the doctors advised him that he was out of danger and in stable condition. Since the Judge had already confirmed to be the  key-note speaker for an  important conference in a different state capital on the next day, he left as  scheduled. On the second day, Christopher, who  was responding initially well,  took a sudden turn for the worse. The doctors  efforts to revive him were in vain,  and Christopher died in delirium. Only Grace was in the bedside at his last moments. He was holding her hands asking for his father. On getting the sad news, the Judge rushed back and by the time he arrived Christopher was no more.  He regretted he was not able to be with his son  at the last moment. His guilty conscience  had tormented him. He compared himself with Cooper, who, even at the age of ninety-eight, taking care of his sixty-three year old son fighting a deadly disease. The Judge felt a surge of strong emotions culminating in cognitive symptoms of depression.  In the afternoon session the Judge took up the case of Cooper. He wished his son’s speedy recovery and appreciated his dedication  even at his grand old  age; he dismissed all charges against him in the case.

Cooper was very happy and thanked the judge for his benevolent act of dismissing the charges.  Unexpectedly he saw his pastor entering the Court room. He was worried on  pastor’s  sudden presence  there and  anxious to know the details of any emergency. The pastor looked dazed to convey the message. He  was holding Cooper’s hands into his and with tears in his eyes, said that all of a sudden William had seizures and passed away few hours ago. Unable to bear William's end, Cooper had a massive heart attack  and died instantly. The judge came down from the podium and offered prayers for the departed soul. He said that Cooper had joined his son William and their union would be an  ‘Eternal Bond’.

The Silent and Invisible Killer of the Century

                - P. Krishnamoorthy

The global outbreak of covid-19 in December 2019 was unprecedented in the annals of human memories. So far it had taken a big toll on human lives. The world population got affected very drastically till the advent of a vaccine in December 2020. Its instant contagious character compelled many protective measures like wearing face masks, social distancing and, lock-down situations. Globally so far nearly fifteen million cases of covid-19 and more than three million deaths were reported. With the 'silent and invisible killer' making its existence the deadliest pandemic, the daily life of human beings became miserable. Also, this infectious and communicable disease had become one of the major public health challenges for many countries in the world. With this backdrop, the following episode had its creation.

With the first morning coffee on hand, Deepika, as usual, greeted the day's newspaper that was lying at the entrance door. In her cursory glance, the headlines carried the alarming scenario with the phenomenal surge in COVID-19 cases. With the shortages of oxygen cylinders and ventilators in hospitals, the situation became worse, with the increase of death cases. The shocking truth was the attending doctors were disappointed with the numerous deaths, as most of the lives could have saved from demise if the oxygen facilities were timely available. This made Deepika curious to read that news in detail. Inside, the photos depicting the corpses waiting in a line to be cremated while many were in the process of burning. She could not control her emotions on seeing such ghastly images.

Deepika, one of the managerial staff of a multi-national IT company, was the eldest daughter in a middle-class family headed by Arvind Sharma, a retired Engineer and supported by his wife, Sharada. Sharat, the only son in the family, a sophomore in a college, was brilliant in academics and excelled in athletics. The whole family believed in a very simple and conventional living. Deepika used to wear the facial mask, observed social distancing and, follow other restrictions meticulously even in the office. She ensured that her family members also follow such governmental directives. In her household, she insisted that the disinfectant spray and wipes be used before any package or vegetables delivered to her home. She would take all precautions to keep the 'silent and invisible killer' away from her family. She often recollected the tragedy and its calamities when one of her male staff lost his fiancée due to covid-19. His emotional words in the funeral "I wanted to marry her and not to bury her" were indelibly imprinted in Deepika's mind.

Chitra, her next-door neighbor and, a close pal since school days, was admitted to a hospital as she was tested covid-19 positive. She was a journalist and in her moving with various types of people she got this deadly disease. Fortunately, she was diagnosed as only in an initial stage and could be cured. She was more concerned about Chitra and often enquired about her condition telephonically with the hospital. She was also eager to know the date of discharge.

One evening when Deepika returned from office, she found Sharat was yet to return from the college. She was enquiring about him with her parents. They said that he informed them over the phone that he would be returning late as he had to attend a friend's birthday party. She was complacent and confident that she and her family were successful in keeping the 'monster devil' away from them. She had a sigh of relief over that except her feelings for Chitra. She offered special prayers for her speedy recovery.

The media reports extensively carried the startling developments about covid-19 It was shameful that the co¬vid-19 safety protocols were violated with the vast assembly of people at election rallies and the Kumbh Mela, and had broken the al¬ready wearied healthcare system. Though policymakers had the power and responsibility to save millions of lives, their other priorities were given importance.

Sharat came home late, looking very tired. Later he developed a continuous cough combined with mild temperature. On inquiry, he revealed his interaction was with his friend's parents from Delhi, who had come down for the birthday function. They were shaking hands and interacting with him without any face mask. Since they had come from Delhi where covid-19 was widely prevalent. Deepika assumed they might have covid infected and that might be the possible source Sharat got the acute respiratory distress syndrome. She was certain that Sharat got the covid virus as its symptoms were well displayed on him.

She was rushing Sharat to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment in their car. She already spoke to her family friend in the hospital. En route Sharat experienced a severe breathing problem. Deepika also saw his condition becoming worse. On reaching the hospital, the authorities informed Deepika that they cannot take Sharat as they do not have oxygen cylinders and ventilators for immediate treatment. Deepika pleaded with the doctor to admit him as he was suffering from an acute breathing problem and there was no nearby hospital to take him. Her hospital friend also pressured the doctor to admit him. On seeing the young patient, the doctor felt he may survive with manual respiratory treatment, finally admitted him to the ICU.

His savior at the moment was a standard oxygen cylinder and a ventilator. After some manual attempts also, his breathing had not improved to a normal level. The doctor got frustrated with his helplessness to save him. But he was not giving up his efforts, the doctor decided to try one full-size E-cylinder kept in the operating room for the anesthetic purpose. Instantly it was brought and connected to Sharat. The problem got solved but it would be short-lived because of the limited capacity of oxygen in the e-cylinder. The doctor also personally felt bad over such situations as when you lose a patient you lose a part of yourself that could never erase from one's memory. Deepika and other friends were anxiously waiting outside to know the result of the treatment. They could see that there was some development with nurses rushing in and out of ICU but nothing was known.

Suddenly there was some commotion going on. The nurse who was in another ICU room rushed to the doctor and said that the old lady with the heart problem had become unconscious. The old lady from a rich celebrity family got admitted to the hospital on the previous day for heart disease. Since she had been a chronic heart patient, she had all the medical facilities at home. When she came, she was accompanied by a mini-hospital. Since she was eighty and with pre-existing multiple health problems, she failed in her fight with the disease. The doctor found that she had passed away just a few minutes before due to a heart attack.

On checking the level of oxygen in the meter, alarmingly he found that it would completely deplete in minutes. Even the doctor's strong mental forte, which had infused courage in him several times in critical scenarios, had a severe setback at that time because of emotional distress. He got perplexed and confused about this development. The life of Sharat would become extinct if he was not immediately connected to a standard oxygen cylinder. The doctor got distressed when he noticed that the patient's pulse rate drastically dropping due to disruption in breathing. It was a clear indication that Sharat's condition was getting too critical.

His tearful eyes were focused on the meter of the E-cylinder. He was aware that the depleted cylinder and its replacement immediately not available. a young life would become a corpse in few seconds. He was utterly desperate and helpless. When realities go beyond one's reach, the human tendency would only seek divine help. The only recourse left for the doctor was to offer special prayers to make Sharat out of the woods.

When the scenario was so grave of having a young human life hanging in the balance, a casual and routine query of the nurse to the doctor, turned the scale to optimism. On hearing the query, the doctor had a flash of thought. Till then his concentration was all about Sharat's sinking stage and this option never occurred to his senses. He instantly reacted and responded to her. All that her trivial query was since the old lady had died whether she could close all her medical equipment. On hearing her query, the doctor's face was brightened and cheerful due to his flash of thought that gave him some positive vibes.

He immediately ordered and the oxygen cylinder and ventilator were brought and connected to Sharat. Still, the doctor was apprehensive about the outcome as there could be a slip between the cup and the lip. He continued his focus on Sharat. It was a miracle that Sharat became conscious in minutes. He was able to breathe gradually. The doctor yelled 'eureka' on the success of his effort. He was jubilant and delighted on seeing Sharat escaped from the clutches of death. The doctor had a sigh of relief for having saved a young life from the cruel covid-19. Being in the prime of youth, he had the courage of conviction to resist the deadly infection. When the good news was divulged to anxious Deepika and others, were extremely happy. The hospital authorities did not allow visitors to see Sharat as a covid-19 patient.

Deepika rushed home to inform her parents of the good news in detail. At the entrance itself, she noticed, a strange silence prevailed at home. Her parents looked very depressed and Deepika could guess something untoward happened. She was bewildered over their strange silence. They did not even enquire anything about Sharat's revival. After few minutes, they broke the tragic news that her friend Chitra had passed away in the morning and all her family members had gone to the hospital to complete the formalities. On hearing this, Deepika felt shattered as if a big blow hit on her head. She was wondering as to how she could die when she was recuperating well from covid-19 on the previous day. It appears that despite effective treatment, Chitra had a sudden relapse of the disease and succumbed to death. Deepika was too emotional about the death of her close longtime friend. With tears in her eyes and prayers in her lips for the departed soul, she realized that cheers and tears are two sides of the 'life coin'.
